A Message from Deputy Mayor Julie DeLaurentis

Come Join the Party with the Harrison Township 55+ Active Adults!

Dear Fellow Residents,

A role I love as part of my Committee responsibilities is being the committee representative (Liaison) for our 55+ Active Adults Group.

As we all know Harrison Township is a welcoming, inclusive community, providing events and activities for residents of all ages. A unique offering of our town is the 55+ Active Adult group, a sub-committee of the Harrison Township Recreation Commission. The group offers local fun and opportunities to meet and socialize with other residents 55 years and older. Members may participate in dynamic exercise classes, Pickleball clinics, enjoy local trips and tours, learn new skills, or simply join in to play cards and board games with peers. Approximately 20 percent of the Township’s population is over the age of 55.

The 55+ Active Adults Committee, our team of volunteers, plan the calendar and coordinate the activities. The team is continually expanding activities and events for adults in Harrison Township. Bus trips and tours are a big part of the fun – over the next two months we are planning trips to Historic Smithville, Delaware Park, Lavender Gardens, the Grounds for Sculpture, and the Hagley Museum.

In addition, the 55+ Active Adults have partnered with the Gloucester County Library System to host movies and other activities at the Mullica Hill branch as well as other libraries in Gloucester County.  The Library offers a Classic Film Club, cooking classes, and afternoon board games along with their Creative Aging Initiative.

Recently the Library had a ribbon cutting for their LEAP program.  The LEAP program is a series of free technology classes sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. These classes teach visually impaired individuals, aged 55 and older, how to use accessible features on iPhones and iPads. These features include the use of Siri, VoiceOver and magnification. Register for classes with the LEAP program by contacting Stephen Felle at (800) 792-8322, ext. 814, or by email at [email protected].

For more information on activities, volunteering, or to suggest new 55+ Active Adults activities and events, call the Active Adult hotline at 856-478-0824, email Barbara Showers at [email protected] or me at [email protected].

Together for Harrison Township,
Julie DeLaurentis
Deputy Mayor
