To Our Harrison Family,
Muslims around the world recognize Ramadan during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which this year began on April 1st and ends on May 1st. Ramadan is the commemoration of the prophet Muhammad’s first revelation, which occurred in the year 610 AD in a cave near the city of Mecca. This is a foundational event for the religion, with the angel Jibril (Gabriel in English) revealing the beginnings of what would become the Quran, the central religious text of Islam.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims choose not to eat or drink between dawn and sunset. Fasting is important during Ramadan; it allows observers to devote themselves to their faith and become closer to Allah (God). Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives. Ramadan teaches the practice of self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate. These lessons encourage actions of generosity and charity.
